Lismore’s Annual Second Hand Garage Trail

Each year, Lismore plays host to Northern NSW’s largest garage sale trail, known as Second Hand Saturday—a celebration of reuse, community connection, and conscious consumerism. The event invites locals to take part in a rewarding experience that’s environmentally friendly, socially engaging, and economically smart.

Hundreds of residents across the region register to hold garage sales, turning driveways and front yards into treasure troves of pre-loved goods. NE Waste education coordinator Linda Tohver encourages participation, even from those who are just considering it. “It’s a great way to get organised and declutter. And if plans change, there’s always flexibility,” she says.

Weather can be unpredictable, but the organisers have contingency plans in place to ensure the event goes ahead safely and smoothly.

With over two decades in waste education, Tohver has seen the sector evolve dramatically. “Waste is never static,” she explains. “We’re constantly exploring new solutions—textile recycling, repair initiatives, reusable markets. Events like this bring people together in a way that’s truly sustainable.”

One of the most exciting shifts she’s noticed is the growing involvement of younger generations. “Thrifting, second-hand shopping, and repair culture are becoming second nature to them. It’s inspiring to see how deeply connected people here are to nature and sustainability.”

Registration is free for individuals and organisations, making it easy for anyone to join the movement. For more details or to get involved, visit secondhandsaturday.com.au
